History of Sultan Badlishah High School
SMK Sultan Badlishah, a secondary school in Kulim, Kedah, Malaysia, was established on 8 January 1948, when the building Kedah Volunteer Force Drill Hall changed its name and function to become a Government English School. Originally the buildings in this school area were situated in an area of 9,368 acres. The buildings were built and used during the Second World War around 1941-1945 as a military camp and administrative office during the reign of the British Government. The idea and effort to establish this school was led by the late Datuk Sri Syed Omar Shahabudin, the Kulim District Officer at that time, when he saw that most parents had to bear the high costs of sending their children to study in Bukit Mertajam and Sungai Petani as there were no other schools nearby.
The first batch consisted of 80 students from Kulim Bandar Baharu, Baling and Sik districts. There were two classes, namely ‘Primary’ and another class ‘Special Malay’. After five years of establishment, the name of the school was changed to Badlishah School in conjunction with DYMM Sultan’s visit to Badlishah in 1952. Then, in 1958, the name of the school was changed again to Sultan Badlishah School.
In 1962, YTM Tunku Abdul Malik, Tunku Bendahara of Kedah, laid the foundation stone for the Samsudin Hall Block which was named after the name of the first Principal of this school. The hall was later inaugurated by DYMM Tunku Abdul Halim Mu’azzam Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah on 28 July 1963.
SMK Sultan Badlishah has its own uniqueness as its building is one of the oldest buildings in the Kulim District. The majestic main building in front of the school is still strong and safe to be used to this day.
